The Company's management team members are seasoned. Cardiosolutions was recently incubated at STD Med, a medical device manufacturing company owned by several of the founding shareholders of Cardiosolutions.
Steven J. Tallarida – President and Chairman of the Board
Mr. Tallarida, 44, brings to Cardiosolutions his expertise and experience from over 18 years of manufacturing medical products. Mr. Tallarida is an owner and director of STD Med, Inc. and has been President of STD Med for over 17 years, during which time Mr. Tallarida transformed STD Med from a defense manufacturing company to an ISO 9001 and ISO 13485 certified, medical device design and manufacturing company. Mr. Tallarida graduated from American University in Washington D.C. in 1984. In addition to co-founding Cardiosolutions, Mr. Tallarida is also a co-founder of Spirus Medical, a medical device company developing and marketing new technology for the diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal disorders. Mr. Tallarida has also co-founded two other medical device companies, Arthrosurface Incorporated which is developing and marketing novel devices for the resurfacing of lesions in the articular cartilage of the joints, and Angiolink Corporation, a medical device startup in the interventional cardiology field, which was sold to Medtronic in November 2004.
Jon Wilson – Chief Operating Officer
Mr. Wilson, 43, is a twenty-year veteran of the medical device industry with extensive experience managing R&D and Operations for both mature and start-up companies. He spent 13 years at US Surgical Corporation in various high visibility positions including Sr. Director-R&D, in the mechanical stapler division and Sr. Director-Operations, in the cardiovascular division. Mr. Wilson most recently held the position of Vice President of Product Development and Operations for device start-up companies such as HydroCision, Inc. and TissueLink Medical, Inc. He is a Mechanical Engineering graduate of Tufts University and holds a Masters in Engineering Management from the University of Bridgeport. His expertise includes operations engineering and management, product design and development, process development, and quality systems in the medical device industry. Mr. Wilson has developed products in multiple market segments, including cardiovascular, OB/GYN, thoracic, arthroscopic, and general colorectal (open and endoscopic). He is a named inventor on 8 issued patents and has successfully brought more than 110 products to market, across 15 different platforms, over a 20-year period.
Thomas Piemonte, M.D., FACC – Chief Medical Officer
Dr. Piemonte, 55, is the Director, Interventional Cardiovascular Medicine and Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory at the Lahey Clinic in Burlington, Massachusetts. Dr. Piemonte is a graduate of The College of the Holy Cross and New York Medical College. He was an intern, resident and Chief Resident at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. Dr. Piemonte is board certified in cardiology, interventional cardiology and internal medicine. In addition to Dr. Piemonte’s practice and academic activities, he is the President of Project Pacer International, a non-profit organization committed to delivering cardiac care to third world countries. He has participated in several clinical studies and he has written and lectured extensively in his field. Dr. Piemonte also serves as a Clinical Instructor at Harvard Medical School.
Chris W. Maurer – Director of Engineering
Mr. Maurer, 36, is an accomplished Program Manager in the medical device industry, with 16 years experience leading multi-disciplinary teams to successful product introductions. Mr. Maurer graduated from Roger Williams College with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and has held Sr. Designer and Program Manager positions for leading device companies, including United States Surgical, Intuitive Surgical, and TissueLink Medical. Mr. Maurer has designed competitive products in the fields of cardiovascular, orthopedic, gastro-intestinal surgery and has extensive operating room experience working with leading physicians on the development of cutting edge technologies. Mr. Maurer has a proven track record of taking projects from concept to production in a timely manner. He has 18 patents and has successfully launched dozens of products.
Ross J. Garofalo – Vice President and Chief Financial Officer
Mr. Garofalo, 46, is the Chief Financial Officer of Spirus Medical, Inc. another start- up company incubated at STD Med. In addition to serving as CFO for Spirus, he will be the Company’s part-time CFO. Mr. Garofalo has extensive experience in financing and managing innovative medical device companies. Before joining Spirus, he was the CFO of Angiolink Corporation, the first company incubated at STD Med, from its inception until its sale to Medtronic in 2004. Before that Mr. Garofalo was the sole proprietor of Eastern Consulting, a financial and interim CFO consulting firm located in Massachusetts. Prior to forming Eastern Consulting, Mr. Garofalo was CFO of Jandel Scientific Software until its acquisition by SPSS Inc. in 1996. Mr. Garofalo was a partner at Berg and Company, a San Francisco-based firm specializing in turnaround management and interim CFO services. Mr. Garofalo earned his M.B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley in 1987 and graduated first in his class with a B.B.A in 1981 from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Mr. Garofalo is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA).
